the men's basketball team took on conference opponent, Southwestern College, in
the Garvey. The Falcons entered the matchup with an overall record of 4-12 and
a conference record of 1-4. The Moundbuilders went into Saturday's matchup with
an overall record of 10-4 and a conference record of 1-4.
In the first
half, Southwestern shot the ball well by going 14 for 30 from field goal range.
Friends remained close throughout the first half by earning trips the free throw line
and playing solid defense by holding Southwestern to just one shot per
possession. With about six minutes left to go in the first half the Falcons
found themselves down by 12. The Falcon coaching staff took a much needed
timeout to regroup. After the timeout, the Falcons dug in deep on defense and
went to work getting solid interior shots on offense. The halftime score was Southwestern
30 and Friends 25. Junior guard Reggie Britton led all scorers at the half with

the ball better from the start of the second half. The Falcons also did a
better job of taking care of the ball by only having four turnovers in the
second half while forcing the Moundbuilders to turn the ball over nine times. Reggie
Britton and senior guard Nick O'Nelio went to work offensively in the second
half by driving the lane and feeding the ball to the Falcon big men, Mike
Hyde and John Bridges. O'Neilo earned several trips to the free throw line with
less than a minute left in the game. These free throws helped cushion the small lead that
the Falcons had and led to the final score of Falcons 58 Southwestern 56.
Britton led all scorers with 20 points. O'Nelio added 13 and was a perfect
eight for eight from the free throw line.
The Falcons are
now 5-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Falcons will travel to Salina,
Kansas to take on the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan University on Thursday, January 13 with
tipoff set for 8pm.
