Men's Golf - Tue, Oct. 7, 2008

Friends University men's golf participated in the 2008 Sterling College Warrior Invitational on Monday, September 29. The first tournament of the season for the Falcons, and for a couple players their first collegiate tournament ever, was played at Cottonwood Hills Golf Course in Hutchinson. "The golf course is probably the most difficult course we will play all year," comments Falcon head coach Aaron Winter. Winter also felt the weather was a little windier than the team has seen in practice thus far this fall, but was nothing out of the norm for any day in Kansas.

The Falcons took their entire team of eight, allowing everyone a chance to familiarize themselves with the course which they will play again in the spring in a conference qualifying tournament. Though the Falcons struggled in adjusting to the wind and the difficulty of the course, they turned in an average performance overall. Coach Winter commented, "…overall we did okay, but not anywhere near our capabilities."

The Falcons finished 4th out of 10 teams with a score of 340 - 331 = 671. Nathan Read continued his strong play from last year with a 3rd place finish after shooting 81 - 75 = 156. Kevin Horn, a freshman, did well in his first collegiate tournament, narrowly missing a top ten finish by shooting 80 - 84 = 164 and finishing in a tie for 11th. Andy Dome, recovering from an injury and not quite 100 percent, also did well, finishing in a tie for 13th.
