WICHITA, Kan. - The Friends University Baseball team's pitching staff has made major strides since last season. That, along with some patience at the plate, were on full display Tuesday evening. The Falcons took the lead early and late in defeating No. 1 Oklahoma City (OCU) 6-4 inside historic Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Friends (29-15) scored twice in the bottom of the 1st inning. Augie Isaacson (SO/New Prague, Minn.) reached after being hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Jacob Trimble (JR/Visalia, Calif.). Elijah Christenson (JR/Justin, Texas) got on when Trimble was tagged out, and Jace Snodgrass (SO/Derby, Kan.) tripled to right center for a 2-0 Falcon lead.

OCU (40-6) had two runners on with one out in the 2nd, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat.

The Falcons made it 3-0 in the 3rd with John Gardner (JR/Douglass, Kan.) doubling and pinch runner Cameron Zane (FR/Wichita, Kan.) scoring on another Snodgrass hit.

Friends starter Daniel Rubio (SO/Temecula, Calif.), already with wins over a pair of ranked teams (at USAO, versus Tabor), shut down the vaunted Stars offense - that came into the game ranked in the top-10 in the nation in 11 offensive categories including batting average, runs scored, hits and slugging - for the first seven innings. OCU had just six hits until getting three straight knocks to start the 8th to cut into the Falcon lead 3-1. Rubio got an infield pop out before giving way to Sean Cruz (JR/Tasi Yona-Guam) out of the bullpen. Cruz gave up a double to tie the game, but ended the inning with a strikeout.

The Falcons rallied in the home-half. After a strikeout, Gardner singled, Christenson was hit by a pitch, and Snodgrass singled. Zane, pinch running again, was cut down at the plate though, giving OCU two outs. Following Snodgrass' steal of second, Joe Pedlowe (SR/Modesto, Calif.) was intentionally walked to load the bases, and that would come back to bite the Stars. Jordan Burnett (FR/Goodyear, Ariz.) walked to bring in one run, and after an OCU pitching change, Justin Fink (JR/Belmont, Calif.) also walked. Friends got their final run of the game on a wild pitch to go up 6-3.

The Stars got a two-out run in the top of the 9th with a hit batsmen and a double, but a ground out to first ended the game.

Rubio went 7.1 innings, giving up nine hits and three earned runs with no walks and four strikeouts. Cruz got his first win of the year, picking up the final five outs.

The Falcon's team ERA stands at 3.55 for the season, after a 6.25 mark in 2016. Friends is even better in conference play at 2.89.

Snodgrass had a game-high three hits on offense, driving in two. Trimble and Gardner added two hits each.

The Falcons return to KCAC play with a trip to Bartlesville, Okla., to take on No. 3 Oklahoma Wesleyan, the team they trail by two games in the conference standings. The teams will play their single game on Friday, April 21st at 6:00pm, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12:00pm.
