WICHITA, Kan. - The Friends University Women's Basketball team bounced back from their first KCAC loss in almost a year with their 16th consecutive win against McPherson College. The Final score of 83-71 didn't tell the story of the game as the Falcons controlled the whole contest, never trailing inside the Garvey P.E. Center.
Friends (20-4, 16-1 KCAC) scored the first five points of the game, with a three from April Quiroz (JR/El Paso, Texas) and a Shann Sellers (SR/Dallas, Texas) layup coming after Bulldog turnovers. McPherson (12-14, 7-11 KCAC) got within one point twice shortly thereafter, but Sellers answered with a steal and layup and Betty Akathiotou (JR/Nicosia, Cyprus) hit a triple to put the Falcons up 10-6 with 5:21 left in the opening period. Quiroz added back-to-back scores to put Friends up by double digits for the first time, and they closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 25-10 after the first.
The Bulldogs hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter before Friends scored the next five for their biggest lead to that point at 30-13. The Falcons couldn't get the lead bigger than that before halftime, but McPherson never got closer than 12. Macy Lozen (JR/Austin, Texas) was fouled just before the buzzer and hit both free throws to put Friends up 46-32 at the break.
McPherson had more turnovers (18) than field goal makes (13) in the first half.
The Bulldogs scored six of the first eight points out of the locker room to pull within 11 at 49-38, but Friends used a 6-0 run to push their lead back out. After a 57-42 score with 5:18 left in the third, the Falcons would close the quarter on an 8-3 run for their first 20 point lead of the game.
Friends started the final period on another run, scoring the first seven points for their biggest lead of the game at 72-45 with 6:51 remaining. The Falcons committed nine fouls in the quarter to allow McPherson to draw closer at the free throw line, but the lead they built up to that point was too much for the Bulldogs to overcome.
Sellers led all players with 27 points, with Lexi Evans (SO/Austin, Texas), Makenzie Vining (JR/Caney, Kan.), Quiroz, and Akathiotou joining her in double figures. McPherson shot 53.2% for the game (25-47), but their 30 turnovers led to 37 Falcon points for the deciding factor of the game.
The Falcons travel to Bartlesville, Okla., to take on Oklahoma Wesleyan on Monday, February 6th in a make-up game from weather back in January. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
